Post Posted: Wed Jan 26, 2011 4:10 am   Post subject: Suggested updates to the "Features" page
Reply with quote

So I was thinking recently that the "Features" page could use some updating. Some of the wording didn't have quite the right professional sound (just my opinion). Some other changes were small, such as using "blog" instead of "weblog" (it's 2011, everyone calls them "blogs" Smile) I took a crack at updating the page, including taking some cues from Wordpress's Features page.

A more bold edit was removing the list of plugins at the bottom. Similar to my inline comments below about maintaining a software list, I wasn't sure if we wanted to actually include specific plugins on the Features page. I think if we do, we should clean up how it's written and include links to each plugin. And they should be the "best of the best" plugins - well-tested, etc.

Thoughts? Additions?

Nucleus Features
Nucleus is a powerful content management system you can use to create a website or blog. Below is an overview of its most important features. Accompanying screenshots are available, as well.

Core Features [link to sub-heading below]
Plugin Extensibility [link to sub-heading below]

Core Features
The Nucleus core package contains a great set of features. By installing plugins, you can extend the feature set even more.

Multiple blogs in one package
Nucleus allows you to set up multiple blogs; you can even display the contents of multiple blogs on the same page.

Multiple authors
Each blog can have its own team of authors. Authors may be restricted to posting only, or given permissions to administer the whole blog.

Categories
Each blog can have multiple categories. Each post is assigned to one category.

Built-in commenting system
Nucleus provides a built-in commenting system, so there's no need for external commenting tools.

Fancy URLs
If your web server supports it, Nucleus can provide URLs optimized for both readers and search engines, like:

http://example.org/item/1234
http://example.org/archives/1
http://example.org/category/6/blogid/1

Runs on your own server
Since Nucleus runs on your own server, you'll be in full control. Network outages of centralized blog tools won't prevent you from posting.

Drafts and future posts
In a hurry? Need some more time to think? You can mark a post as a draft and continue working on it later. Or would you like a post to only appear starting on a certain date? Mark it as a future post.

Fully customizable
Your site design is fully customizable through Nucleus' skin and template systems, as well as CSS. Additionally, the language used in the administration area can be easily changed.

Plugins
Plugins are easy to install and allow you to extend the core features of Nucleus in numerous ways. See below for a small sample of available Nucleus plugins.

The [plugin API] is robust, allowing developers to add features while keeping the core software lean and efficient.

Simple posting from anywhere
Using the Nucleus bookmarklet, you can quickly open a window from any site and start writing a post.

Archives and search
Nucleus automatically archives your blog posts and the search function allows you to find posts quickly. Search terms may also be highlighted, both in articles and comments.

RSS and Atom syndication
Each blog has RSS and Atom syndication feeds. Other formats may be added easily through the skin and template systems.

Remote posting
Nucleus implements the Blogger, MetaWeblog, and MovableType APIs, allowing you to use a variety of software to post to your site. [do we really want to maintain a list of software here?]

Media upload
Nucleus allows you to easily upload media and embed it in your post.

Ban control
Nucleus allows you to ban commenters by IP address, IP range, or nickname.

Backup / restore
Nucleus allows you to backup or restore its entire database with a simple click.

What do I need to run Nucleus?
You'll need the following (if you don't know where to find version information, ask your system administrator).

A server running PHP 4.0.6 or higher (4.2+ is recommended)
Access to a MySQL database (MySQL 3.23.x or above)

Plugin Extensibility
Plugins can extend Nucleus to do almost anything you desire. Nucleus Core is designed to be a lightweight tool that can be used for different purposes through plugins.

I'm happy you are tackling this. That is good content to freshen. One thing I think we should change are the minimum requirements. We don't officially support PHP4 anymore (though I don't think we've excluded it yet. Also, I'm not sure we're actively trying to support mysql3, either. Maybe we should draw a line in the sand.

You are probably right about listing plugins. Maybe just a link to the two main repositories (english and japanese)?

In the Fully Customizable section maybe add something about the existence of over NN+ ready to use skins? Not sure what the actual number is now.

How about something like 'see the list of plugins here:' (with a link to the plugins list wiki page, of course).

This is really good. I agree that it make sense to delete the list of plugins at the very bottom, moving some of the wording up into the plugin heading and linking to the wiki near the top of the page and under the plugin heading. Fancy URLs are implemented through a plugin; why list them under core features? Also, the words blog, custom, plugin and blog site seem to be heavily searched terms that could be worked through the copy.
Fully customizable, lightweight, extendable through plugins and multiple blogs on the same install are four huge features. Can they be listed at the top? A suggestion is written below:

Fully customizable
Customize your website or blog according to your design vision using Nucleus skin and template systems, as well as through your implementation of HTML, CSS, PHP and/or JS. This means that your website or blog will appear based on how you implement your concept, not how a system requires.
Additionally, the language used in the administration area can be easily changed.

Lightweight
The Nucleus Core is designed to be a lightweight tool that can be easily extended for different purposes through the use of plugins [link to wiki]. You control the features that go into your website or blog. Less disk space is used on your server. And your pages load faster.

Plugins
Extend the core features of Nucleus to do almost anything you desire with easily installed plugins [link to wiki]. Some plugins include search-engine-friendly URLs, a state-of-the-art text editor, an events calendar, printer-friendly options, podcasting and much more.
For developers, the plugin API is robust. Add features while keeping the core software lean and efficient.

Multiple blogs in one installation
Nucleus allows you to set up multiple blogs on the same installation. You can even display the contents of multiple blogs on the same page.

Great points, TCC. Just one note about Fancy URLs. They are available in the core in the format described in the text. FancierURL2 is a plugin that gives fancier fancy urls (that make use of concatenating item titles, etc...), as is CustomURL a plugin that gives customizable urls per item (set manually per item, or given name like item_45 and pages have .html extension). So, I would leave that text as it is because it is accurate, but maybe add a sentence that states that other URL schemes are available through plugins.

Now the Activate Fancy URLs global setting makes sense. I hadn't connected those dots before now. Thank you.
